While many visitors to Beijing are drawn to the well-known Nanluoguxiang Hutong, there’s another lesser-known yet equally charming spot – Yandaixie Street. Located near the picturesque Shichahai area, Yandaixie Street offers a unique blend of history, culture, and local delights. This quaint, slanted street is perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll, with its craft shops, artisanal boutiques, and street food stalls. After exploring, you can head to Shichahai in the evening to watch the sunset and enjoy a drink by the lakeside. Here’s your guide to making the most of Yandaixie Street.
Getting There: Take the metro to Shichahai Station and exit from A1. From there, walk 200-300 meters to the entrance of Yandaixie Street.
Must-Visit Shops
Daqing Post Office (大清邮政局): This is arguably the most famous shop on Yandaixie Street. It’s a perfect place for photos, with a wall full of handwritten postcards from people all over the world. As you walk further inside, you’ll find unique souvenirs like fridge magnets, envelopes, sachets, couplets, and creative items inspired by the Forbidden City.
Jing Shanzi (京扇子): This store specializes in beautifully crafted traditional Chinese fans. The intricate designs and delicate craftsmanship are stunning, and the fans range in price from around 40 RMB to several thousand. It’s a great place to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir that reflects Beijing’s rich culture.
Wuxian Chuangyi (无限创艺): This shop is dedicated to “Tu’er Ye” (兔二爷), a traditional Beijing clay figurine symbolizing peace and good fortune. Each figurine is handmade, meaning no two are exactly the same. According to local custom, gifting a Tu’er Ye is a way to wish someone well, so be sure to pick one up as a meaningful souvenir from your trip.
Tangfang Café (糖房咖啡): Tangfang Café offers one of the best spots to relax and enjoy a coffee while taking in stunning views of Shichahai. The third-floor seating area has indoor views of the lake, while the fourth-floor terrace offers a panoramic view of the sunset. Order your coffee, snap a few pictures, and unwind as you watch the boats on the lake and feel the evening breeze.
Where to Eat
Yandaixie Street is also home to a variety of famous old restaurants that are worth trying.
Ya’er Liji Hotpot (鸦儿李记涮肉): A beloved spot for traditional Beijing-style hotpot.
Kao Rou Ji (烤肉季): This time-honored restaurant is famous for its grilled meats, a must-try for any meat lover.
Ping’an Dumplings (平安锅贴): Known for its delicious potstickers, this local favorite offers crispy, juicy dumplings that are perfect for a quick snack or light meal.
Evening by the Lake
After you’ve explored Yandaixie Street, take a short walk to Houhai to catch the sunset. The view from the lake is breathtaking, especially during dusk when the sky lights up in hues of orange and pink. While the area around Yinding Bridge can get crowded, you can always find a quieter spot to enjoy the serene beauty of Shichahai. In addition to the sunset, the cool breeze from the lake and the surrounding historical architecture provide a perfect backdrop for soaking in the atmosphere of old Beijing.
