This guide takes you on a scenic and cultural journey through some of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks, with minimal walking to ensure a leisurely experience. The route starts from the northern exit of the Forbidden City, leading you through Jingshan Park, Beihai Park, the historic Prince Gong’s Mansion, the serene Shichahai area, and finally to the bustling Drum and Bell Towers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to enjoying these highlights with ease:
Exit the Forbidden City through the North Gate
Jingshan Park: After exiting the Forbidden City, walk along the designated path to the west entrance of Jingshan Park. It takes about ten minutes to reach the Wanchun Pavilion, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Forbidden City to the south, the Olympic Tower to the north, the CBD skyline to the east, and the White Pagoda of Beihai Park to the west.
Beihai Park: After descending from Jingshan, exit through the west gate and enter Beihai Park through the east gate. Head south (to the left) to capture photos of the White Pagoda from the southern gate area. Then, cross the Yong’an Bridge to visit the White Pagoda up close on Qionghua Island. Continue north along the marked path, passing several docks where you can take a boat tour of Beihai. An hour is sufficient for the tour, and you’ll need to return the boat to the starting point. Before exiting through the north gate, head west to explore the Daci Zhenru Hall in Xitian Fanjing, made entirely of precious nanmu wood, and then visit the unique double-sided Nine-Dragon Wall. Further ahead, you’ll find the Five-Dragon Pavilion, with its stunning coffered ceiling. Retrace your steps and exit through the north gate of Beihai Park.
Shichahai: Directly across the street from Beihai Park’s north gate is Shichahai. The Qianhai area of Shichahai is known for the Lotus Market, while Houhai is famous for its lively bar street, separated by the Yinding Bridge. This spot offers a perfect view of the sunset, ideal for photos. Nearby, you’ll find the historic Kao Rou Ji restaurant, known for its delicious grilled meat.
Prince Gong’s Mansion: After exiting Beihai Park’s north gate, cross the street and head west along Qianhai West Street. You’ll pass the former residence of Guo Moruo. Continue to the end of the street, turn left, and walk a few hundred meters to reach Prince Gong’s Mansion. After your visit, retrace your steps along the north shore of Qianhai to reach the Yinding Bridge in Shichahai.
Drum Tower: After enjoying a meal of grilled meat, head to the nearby Yandai Xiejie and turn left at the end to reach the Drum Tower. The Bell Tower is located just behind it, both of which are open for tours. Across from the Drum Tower is the Beijing Daoxiangcun bakery with its iconic LOGO, and just a bit east is the famous Yaoji Chaogan restaurant. Following the green line path, you’ll also find the old Beijing flower tea shop, Wuyutai Tea House.
Nanluoguxiang: Continue walking east for about 10 minutes to reach the northern entrance of Nanluoguxiang. Stroll through the alley, and at the southern end, you’ll find the Nanluoguxiang subway station, where you can catch the subway back to your hotel.
Alternative Route: If you’d prefer to skip Beihai Park after exiting Jingshan, simply walk north until you reach Gongjian Hutong near Qingyun Temple. Follow the hutong north, and you’ll find yourself at Shichahai directly.
