After successfully reserving a visit to Tiananmen Square through the official WeChat public account, I planned to explore Tiananmen Square and the National Museum on a regular Tuesday. Since I lived nearby, I took a taxi and, following the advice from various guides, got off at the south gate of the Central Institute of History and Culture, then entered through Security Checkpoint No. 4.
Although the checkpoint was indeed close after getting off, the place was swarming with people! It took a full hour and a half to pass through the three security checks. Unless you have children and can use the fast track, I strongly advise against using this entry point!
Later, when I entered the National Museum from the north gate, I noticed Security Checkpoint No. 3 next to it, which is also the Tiananmen East Station C exit, and there were only a few people. I regretted not choosing this route earlier!
Genuine Recommendations:
- It’s best to take the subway and exit at Tiananmen East Station B or C (if visiting the National Museum as well, choose exit C). After visiting the National Museum, you can directly enter Tiananmen Square without additional security checks!
- If taking the subway is inconvenient, you can take a taxi to No. 5 Justice Road and walk about 7-8 minutes to reach Security Checkpoint No. 3.
Tips:
- If you didn’t reserve a spot for Tiananmen but have reservations for the Forbidden City or the National Museum, you can still enter Tiananmen Square.
- Bringing children is like having a VIP fast pass, allowing you to find a security guard and quickly pass through the security check.
