Experience the perfect blend of history, culture, and local flavors on this classic Beijing city walk route, which takes you from the tranquil beauty of Beihai Park to the bustling streets of Nanluoguxiang via the iconic Drum Tower. This itinerary is ideal for visitors who want to immerse themselves in Beijing’s rich heritage while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of its neighborhoods. Starting with a leisurely exploration of Beihai Park, you’ll then venture into the heart of old Beijing, discovering hidden gems, traditional eateries, and unique shops along the way.
Route: Beihai Park → Drum Tower → Nanluoguxiang: This is a classic Beijing route that you can’t miss! Perfect for first-time visitors to the city.
Start at Beihai North Station on Line 6 and enter Beihai Park through the North Gate. The entrance fee is 15 RMB. Although the boat rides are temporarily closed, the park is filled with beautiful scenery and numerous photo spots. Two hours is definitely not enough to explore it all!
After exiting the North Gate of Beihai Park, you’ll find yourself across from the Lotus Market in Shichahai. For lunch, I recommend Richang Restaurant, a long-established eatery with authentic Hong Kong flavors. If you prefer a full meal, there are plenty of snacks between here and Houhai, and even more restaurants near Yandai Xiejie.
Walk along the Lotus Market and cross Yinding Bridge to reach Yandai Xiejie, a street filled with small shops offering a wide variety of goods.
After leaving Yandai Xiejie, you’ll find even more restaurants, including Makye Ame Restaurant and various famous Beijing eateries.
It’s a 20-minute walk from the Drum Tower to Nanluoguxiang. Along the way, there are many small shops offering food, drinks, and entertainment. The newly opened Gulouyuan is a great spot for taking photos.
In Nanluoguxiang, Fangzhuanchang Zhajiangmian is a must-try. It’s so popular that every branch has a queue. You can even buy bottled Zhajiang sauce to take home—it’s the same price as on Taobao.
Nanluoguxiang Station connects to Lines 6 and 8, making it easy to get anywhere in the city. If you’re unsure of the way, just follow the crowd.
Tip: This route gets very crowded during holidays, so if you don’t like crowds, try to avoid peak times!
