Shichahai, a historical area in central Beijing, offers visitors a scenic walk around its lakes, combining rich culture, local life, and natural beauty. If you’re short on time but want to experience the charm of Shichahai, this quick one-hour walking tour is perfect. You’ll enjoy peaceful views, sunset moments, and a taste of local snacks, all while exploring the vibrant area around Qianhai and Houhai lakes.
1-Hour Shichahai Walking Route
- Start at Shichahai Metro Station, Exit A1. Head south toward Qianhai Lake (前海) and begin walking around the lake (even if the map shows a straight line, follow the lakeshore).
- Rest stop at the Lotus Viewing Area. Take a break here to watch locals swimming in the lake.
- Walk toward Houhai (后海). Cross the bridge and continue walking about 100 meters to enjoy music and a beautiful sunset over the lake.
- Return the same way. Cross the bridge again and pass through the nearby hutongs toward Yandai Xiejie (烟袋斜街).
- Quickly walk through Yandai Xiejie (烟袋斜街). Turn left and head toward the Drum Tower.
- Cross the street at the Drum Tower. Walk in the opposite direction to Meitan Village (梅谭村) to sample some local pastries.
- Head to Sanyuan Meiyuan (三元梅园). Cross the street and stop at the Xindi Mall (新地佰富) to buy famous Sanyuan Meiyuan snacks on the first floor.
Tips:
Arrive at Shichahai around 5 p.m. for the best sunset at 5:30 p.m., as the sky dims by 6 p.m.
Qianhai (前海) offers more activities, while Houhai (后海) is perfect for boating and watching the sunset.
